4.1.6. Removal, survey and installation to the place of a distributive chain and asterisks

This Section included also the procedure of removal of a driving chain of a balancing shaft on late models.

Removal

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Install the crankshaft in the provision of the top dead point of a step of compression of the N1 piston (the next to a distributive chain) (address the Section Provision of the Top Dead Point (TDP) of the 1st Piston).

2. Uncover a distributive chain (address the Section Removal and installation to the place of a cover of a distributive chain). Also remove driving capture of the oil pump from the crankshaft.

B204/B234 engines (with balancing shaft)

As balancing shaft rotate twice quicker than the crankshaft, they can appear, both in situation to the top dead point, and in situation to the lower dead point.

Pay attention that on asterisks of balancing shaft, there are tags inlet ("INL") and final ("EXH"). Both forward bearings are marked identically. However, as bearings are installed on the only bolt, inlet and final tags will be always correctly located in the top part of the bearing.

Inlet tag of "INL" on the forward bearing of an inlet balancing shaft

Output tag of "EXH" on the forward bearing of a final balancing shaft

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Make sure that distributive tags on shaft, coincided with the corresponding tags on a forward wall of the block of cylinders. For bigger confidence at installation into place apply tags with paint on chains and on asterisks.

2. Otboltite top guide of a chain of a balancing shaft.

3. Remove the top guide of a chain of a balancing shaft.
4. Pay attention that the top guide is put on the directing plug.
5. Remove a natyazhitel of a chain of a balancing shaft.
6. Remove a side guide.
7. Otboltite from the block an uspokoitel of a chain.
8. Remove a fixing bolt of an uspokoitel of a chain (on a chain and an uspokoitel tags of mutual situation are not provided).
9. Then remove a chain from asterisks of balancing shaft.
10. Remove an uspokoitel of a chain and a chain of a balancing shaft.
11. Pay attention that the uspokoitel of a chain consists of two parts.
12. Remove an asterisk of a balancing shaft from a forward part of the crankshaft. Pay attention that the tag of "SAAB" has to be turned outside.
13. Give fixing bolts and remove asterisks from the ends of balancing shaft. For this purpose the asterisk can be held by means of a chain key for removal of an oil filter. Postpone asterisks so that not to mix them at installation.

 REMOVAL

1. Uncover a head of cylinders as it is described in the Section Removal and installations to the place of a cover of a head of cylinders.

2. Unscrew and remove a natyazhitel of a distributive chain from a back part of a head of cylinders. For this purpose at first unscrew the central bolt.

3. Remove a spring.

4. Then unscrew a natyazhitel.

5. Remove a natyazhitel on a back wall of a head of cylinders.

6. Holding each cam-shaft by means of the wrench which is put on the facets made on the ends of the cam-shafts turned to a flywheel / to a driving disk weaken (however do not remove so far) fixing bolts of asterisks of cam-shafts.

7. Unscrew and remove a bolt, then remove an asterisk from the end of an inlet cam-shaft. Hold with one hand a distributive chain, and other hand take out from it an asterisk.
8. Mark asterisks so that not to mix them. Pay attention that each asterisk has a ledge which enters a cut at the end of a cam-shaft.
9. Unscrew and remove a fixing bolt.
10. Remove an asterisk from the end of a final cam-shaft, then release it from a chain.
11. Unscrew bolts.
12. Remove the fixed guide of a distributive chain from the block of cylinders.
13. Remove a chain from asterisk teeth. On the engines equipped with balancing shaft, at first to an otboltita the holder from the block of cylinders (it is specified by an arrow). In case of need take a spline from a flute in the crankshaft by means of the screw-driver.

14. Remove an asterisk from the end of the crankshaft.

The distributive chain removed from the engine

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. The distributive chain (and where it is established, a chain of balancing shaft) has to be replaced in case of wear of asterisks or at excessive weakening of a chain and a roar during the work. It is always quite good to replace a chain, having taken an opportunity, when dismantling the engine for capital repairs. In rollers of strongly worn-out chain flutes can be formed. In order to avoid further problems in case there are any doubts in definition of a condition of a distributive chain, it is better to replace a chain. Have to be at the same time examined and if necessary are replaced a natyazhitel of a chain and guides (address the Section Removal, survey and installation to the place of guides and a natyazhitel of a distributive chain).
2. Examine teeth of asterisks of a cam-shaft and the crankshaft (and also if are available, asterisks of balancing shaft) regarding wear detection. Each tooth has to have the form of the turned letter "V". At wear sidewalls of teeth of which the emphasis is the share get slightly concave (kryukoobrazny) form in comparison with the second party of a tooth, (i.e. one of the turned parties of a letter V will have more concave forming, than another). In case of signs of wear of teeth, asterisks have to be replaced.

Installation into place

PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Install a spline in a flute in the crankshaft. Completely seat her in a flute (if necessary having tapped), having made sure that she sat down parallel to a crankshaft axis.

2. Put on a distributive chain a crankshaft asterisk, then put on an asterisk the end of the crankshaft, having made sure that she correctly sat down on a spline.

3. If on a chain there is the only brilliant link, it should be put on the lower part of an asterisk so that it coincided with the dredging which is available on an asterisk. On the engines equipped with balancing shaft establish the holder of a chain and tighten bolts.

4. Place the fixed guides in a distributive chain, then establish a guide on the place and tighten bolts.
5. Establish an asterisk for the end of a final cam-shaft, insert a bolt and at this stage tighten it by hand. Do not grease a bolt carving with liquid for fixing of threaded connections.
6. Make sure that the crankshaft and cam-shafts still are in the provision of the top dead point (TDP).
7. Pass a distributive chain through an opening of a head of cylinders and put on it an asterisk of a final cam-shaft, having made sure that it is tense between asterisks. Make sure that the chain correctly laid down in guides. If on a chain there is the only brilliant link, make sure that it coincides with a distributive tag.
8. Insert an asterisk of an inlet cam-shaft into a chain contour so that connecting dredging and a ledge coincided, then put on an asterisk the end of an inlet cam-shaft and insert a bolt. Tighten a bolt at this stage by hand. Do not grease a bolt carving with liquid for fixing of threaded connections. If on a chain there is the only brilliant link, make sure that it is combined with a distributive tag.

9. Following below to the given instructions, collect a natyazhitel of a driving chain.
10. On the models made till 1988 completely push a plunger into the case of a natyazhitel and turn it for blocking.
11. On late models by means of the screw-driver wring out a doggie down, and then push a plunger completely in a natyazhitel. Then release a doggie. Check a condition of laying of a natyazhitel, if necessary replace it.
12. Insert the case of a natyazhitel into a head of cylinders and tighten with the required effort.
13. On models till 1988 the issue inclusive, record a natyazhitel by pressing of a boot of a natyazhitel of a chain to it, then press a guide to a chain for providing its tension. At start of the engine the remained weak point will be chosen under the influence of hydraulic pressure.
14. On the models made after 1988 insert a spring and the plastic directing finger in a natyazhitel, then establish a stopper with a new sealing ring and tighten it with the required effort.
15. Temporarily establish into place a bolt of a pulley of the crankshaft and turn the engine on 2 whole revolutions clockwise. Make sure that distributive tags are still correctly combined. Remove a pulley bolt. If on a chain there is the only brilliant link, pay attention that now it will not coincide with distributive tags.
16. Completely tighten bolts of asterisks of cam-shafts with the required effort, holding shaft from rotation by means of the wrench which is put on lysk.
17. Establish into place a cover of a head of cylinders (address the Section Removal and installations to the place of a cover of a head of cylinders).

New natyazhitel are supplied with a tension spring, withheld in tension by means of a finger. Do not take this finger until the natyazhitel is not screwed in with a tension in a head of cylinders. At start of the engine, the remained weak point will be chosen under the influence of hydraulic pressure.
