8.3. Check and recharge of the battery

Check of the standard battery and battery demanding the minimum service

At an insignificant annual run it makes sense each three months to check the specific weight of electrolyte of the battery for definition of a condition of a charge of the battery. Use the areometer to check, compare results to the results given in the following table. Remember that measurement of specific weight of electrolyte has to be performed at a temperature of electrolyte of 15 °C; at fall of temperature below 15 °C on each 10 °C it is necessary to subtract 0.007. On each 10 °prevysheniye of temperature over value of 15 °C it is necessary to add 0.007. However, for convenience, are provided in the following table of value for ambient temperatures, above or it is below 25 °C:

If there is a suspicion on bad condition of the battery, first of all check the specific weight of electrolyte in each can. The difference in indications between the next banks in 0.040 indicates losses of electrolyte or pollution of internal plates.

If the difference between specific weight makes more than 0.040, the battery has to be replaced. In case the difference between the specific weight of electrolyte is in various banks in admissible limits, and the battery is discharged, it is necessary to make recharge of the battery according to the instructions given below in this Section.

Check of the battery which is not demanding service

In case the battery of tight type is installed on the car, the dolivaniye or check of electrolyte in each can are impossible. However, the condition of the battery can be checked by means of the indicator of a condition of the battery or the voltmeter.

Sometimes the battery with the built-in charge indicator is installed. The indicator is located in the top part of a casing of the battery and specifies a condition of the battery by change of the color. If the indicator has green color, then the battery is well loaded. If the indicator gets more dark shade passing in black, then the battery demands recharge according to the instructions given below in this Section. If color of the indicator brightens, passing in yellow, then electrolyte level fell in the battery below an admissible limit and the battery demands replacement. Do not try to recharge, fill or make start of the car from a foreign source at light or yellow color of the indicator.

If for check of a condition of the battery the voltmeter is used, connect the voltmeter to plugs of the battery and compare result to the values given in the Section: Conditions of charging, Specifications - at the beginning of this Chapter. Check can be considered exact if the battery was not exposed to any way of recharge during, at least, the previous 6 hours, including recharge from the generator. If it not so, then include for 30 seconds of a headlight, then wait 4-5 minutes after switching off of headlights and start check of the battery. At the same time all other electric contours have to be switched off (for this purpose check that doors, the back door or a trunk lid were completely closed during conducting check).

At indications of the voltmeter lower than 12.2 In the battery it is considered discharged. Indications ranging from 12.2 to 12.4 B indicate a partial discharge of the battery.

In case it is necessary to make battery charging, remove it from the car (The section Removal and installation to the place of the battery) and make its charging according to the description of the procedure provided in the following paragraphs.

Charging of the standard battery or battery demanding the minimum service

The description given below should be considered only as the general scheme of actions. Always before starting battery charging, attentively read the instruction of the manufacturer (often the instruction is printed on the label attached to the battery).


You make battery charging at currents 3.5-4 A and continue charging at this value of current until increase in specific weight of electrolyte does not stop within, at least, 4 hours.

Alternatively, it is safely possible to make slow battery charging at currents 1.5 A during the whole night.

It is not recommended to make bystry battery charging for restoration of its power within 1-2 hours, use of such chargers can lead to serious damages of plates of the battery because of an overheat.

When charging battery you watch that temperature of electrolyte did not exceed 37.8 °C.

Battery charging, not demanding service

The description given below should be perceived only as the general scheme to action, always use instructions of the manufacturers (who are often printed on the label attached to the battery case).


This type of the battery for a full charge demands longer time of charging, than standard type of the battery, at the same time time of charging depends on time during which the battery was not charged, however it can occupy something about 3 days.

Battery charging requires the charger with constant voltage of 13.9-14.9 V with charging current to 25 A. When using this method the battery will be efficient in 3 hours with delivery of tension 12.5B, however it will be only partially charged battery, the full charge demands much longer time.

Use of the ordinary charger should not cause damage to the battery in case there is no excessive liberation of gas and the battery does not overheat.
