3.32. Check of steering, suspension bracket and shock-absorbers

Check of steering, suspension bracket and shock-absorbers (through 30 000 km or in 24 months) *

For definition of intervals of conducting these checks see appropriate section of the schedule of routine maintenance of the car.


1. Cock the emergency brake, the car in front and behind and strongly establish to a poddomkratta it on axial props.
2. Visually examine boots of spherical hinges and a cuff of steering rack transfer regarding detection of cracks, cuts and other damages. Any wear of these components involves lubricant loss, and also hit in cuffs and hinges of moisture, bystry failure of spherical hinges or the steering mechanism can be result.
3. Having grasped each wheel in turn in points on 12 and for 6 hours try to shake a wheel. Let's allow only hardly notable side play. Existence of a noticeable side play demands carrying out further researches regarding detection of a source of malfunctions. Continue to shake a wheel while your assistant squeezes out a foot brake. If at the same time the side play decreased or disappeared, then the side play reason most likely lies in malfunction of wheel bearings. If the side play did not change when pressing a foot brake, then wear of hinges or support of a suspension bracket takes place.
4. Now in turn grasp each forward wheel in points on 9 and for 3 hours and again try to shake it. Existence of a side play can indicate or wear of wheel bearings again, or wear of spherical hinges of steering drafts. With wear of an internal or external spherical support the side play will be well notable.
5. Check whether there is a side play in plugs of support of a suspension bracket, having inserted the big screw-driver between the corresponding component of a suspension bracket and a point of its connection. In case the support is made of rubber, the small side play is normal, however excessive wear will be quite obvious. Examine also all rubber plugs regarding detection of cracks, cuts and pollution of rubber.
6. Check whether there are no leaks around racks of a forward suspension bracket and back shock-absorbers. In case of detection of traces of leak the corresponding rack or the shock-absorber have to be replaced as they have an internal damage.
7. Lower the car on the earth.
8. Overall performance of racks and shock-absorbers of a suspension bracket can be checked by pressing each corner of the car in turn. If racks / shock-absorbers are in good shape, the body will rise and then will fall to the normal situation. If after an otpuskaniye rocking continues, it indicates possible malfunction of a rack or the shock-absorber of a suspension bracket. Examine also all lower and top support of racks / shock-absorbers of a suspension bracket regarding detection of signs of wear.
9. On the car standing on all 4 wheels ask the assistant to rotate a steering wheel back and forth approximately on 1/8 turn for one turn. The delay of transfer of the movement from a steering wheel to the operated wheels has to be absent or be minimum. In case of existence of a notable side play carefully examine hinges and support as it is described above, however, in addition check whether there is no wear of the cardan hinge of a steering column, and also the most rack transfer.

Racks and shock-absorbers always have to be replaced in pairs on each axis.
