2.31. Gear shifting

Gear shifting and position of the lever

Manual transmission

Provisions of the lever of gear shifting are shown on its handle. Before turning on of the reverse gear it is necessary to lift a ring under the lever handle.

At gear shifting completely squeeze out a pedal of coupling and then smoothly release it. It is not recommended to conduct the car, holding one hand on the switching lever, it increases wear of the transmission.

When switching with a heel to the fourth transfer do not press the lever in the side direction incidentally not to include the second transfer that can cause excess of admissible turns of the engine and its damage.

Before turning on of the reverse gear be convinced that the car is in rest and your leg not on an accelerator pedal. Move the lever from neutral situation to the right to the full, and then include a backing.

In the table given below speeds of the movement at which it is necessary to include the following transfer for the maximum economy of fuel are specified.

Transfer change

Speed of the movement

1-2
25 km/h
2-3
40 km/h
3-4
65 km/h
4-5
75 km/h

Gear shifting - automatic transmission

The basis of the lever of the selector has a dial with illumination on which symbols of provisions of ranges of the selector are represented.

"P" — the Parking
"R" — the Backing
"N" — Neutral situation

Transfers for advance:

"D" — the 1st - the 4th transfer
"3" — the 1st - the 3rd transfer
"2" — the 1st - the 2nd transfer
"1" — only the 1st transfer

It is impossible to establish situation "P", "R", or "N" at the movement of the car. At repeated installation of position of the movement it can lead to accident or damage of the transmission.

Provisions of the lever of the selector

Pressing an accelerator pedal at shift of the lever of the selector can cause the increased wear of transmission.

At installation of provision of the movement always you hold a leg on a brake pedal.
It is not necessary to hold a hand on the selector lever as it can cause wear of transmission.

Gear shifting lever

Between installation of the lever in provision of the movement and dispersal it is necessary to do a pause in several seconds to give the chance to join to transfer.

In some provisions the lever of the selector is blocked, and for its movement it is necessary to press the button on the lever handle. Blocking takes place between the following provisions.

"D" ›"3"
"N" ›"R"
"R" ›"P"
"P" ›"R"
"3" ›"2"

"P"

This situation can be established only at the standing car. The lever of the selector and transmission are blocked. Start of the engine can be made.

"R"

This situation can be established only at the standing car. It is necessary to press the button on the lever handle.

Before start-off it is necessary to wait several seconds that transfer of a backing joined.

"N"

In this situation the engine is disconnected from transmission. Start of the engine can be made. In order to avoid swing of the car on a slope it is necessary to use the emergency brake.
In order to avoid an overheat of the engine and transmission it is necessary to establish situation "N" at long stops of the car (for example, in traffic jams). At expectation of the signal of the traffic light allowing the movement it is necessary to establish situation "D".

"D"

This situation is applied when driving in usual conditions. The car starts on the first transfer, and then there are automatic switchings between the 2nd, 3rd and 4th transfers. The moment of switching depends on the provision of a pedal of an accelerator and speed of the movement.

"3"

In this situation the 4th transfer is blocked. The car starts on the first transfer and then there are automatic switchings between the 2nd and 3rd transfers.
Situation 3 is recommended when driving on twisting roads and in the dense city movement. At shift of the lever from situation "D" in situation 3 transmission immediately switches to the 3rd transfer that causes strong effect of braking by the engine. It is not necessary to do it at a speed over 130 km/h.

"2"

This situation is recommended at movement along mountain roads. At the same time engine capacity is better used and the effect of braking by the engine increases. Transmission automatically switches between the first and second transfers. The third and fourth transfers are blocked.

At shift of the lever or from situation 3 in situation 2 switching from the third transfer to the second comes from situation "D" only at a speed of the movement smaller, than some in advance set speed, in order to avoid increase in turns of the engine up to unacceptable values.

"1"

This situation is recommended at rise on very steep slopes and during descent from them. On the one hand, effective braking is provided with the engine, on the other hand, the constant gear shiftings leading to an overheat of working liquid of transmission are liquidated.

If to transfer the lever from situation "D" to situation 1, then there is an immediate switching to the 3rd transfer; further, as speed will decrease to 70 km/h, there will be a switching to the 2nd transfer; and further as speed will decrease to 30 km/h, there will be a switching to the 1st transfer. It is not necessary to install the selector lever in this situation at the speeds exceeding 130 km/h. Manual switching is also undesirable on the ice-covered road. At this position of the lever of the selector there is no switching to the highest transfers.

Squeezing of a pedal of an accelerator to a floor (kik-Down)

When squeezing a pedal of an accelerator to a floor - in situation "kik-Down" - there is a switching to the lowest transfer to provide a power stock, for example for overtaking. Switching to the following transfer happens only at high turns of the engine or at an accelerator pedal otpuskaniye.
