17.3. Safety locks and the relay - the general information

Safety locks are intended for interruption of an electric contour, in case of achievement by current of an electric contour of in advance set force limit. It is necessary for protection of components and wires against burn-out when passing of current of excess force through them. Passing through a contour of excess current usually results in malfunction of a contour, most often to short circuit (address the Section Search of Malfunctions of Electric Systems - the general information).

The main safety locks are located in a safety box which is behind the falling panel in a ware box. The safety box also serves as a distributive guard for various sections of plaits of wires of the car.

For ensuring access to a box of safety locks, open a ware box, then press and release the top part of the panel of a box of safety locks, having allowed it to open click.

Additional safety locks are established in an auxiliary box of safety locks which is in a motive compartment in front of the battery. On some models the safety locks concerning system of anti-blocking of brakes (ABS) and the traction control system are located in the box of safety locks which is specially intended for them installed in a motive compartment on a partition, near the tank of brake fluid.


For removal of a safety lock, first of all make sure that the corresponding contour is disconnected. In case of doubts, disconnect a negative wire of the battery.

By means of the special plastic tool attached to a box of safety locks take a safety lock from its nest.

Examine a safety lock through a side transparent plastic surface - easy to determine the burned-down safety lock by the melted or broken off crossing point.


Spare safety locks are located on deaf plugs of a safety box.

Before replacing a safety lock, at first establish and eliminate a cause of defect. Always use the safety locks calculated on the required current. Do not establish the safety locks calculated on big current at all and, especially, do not use the bugs made of a metal wire as a temporary measure - it can lead to much more serious damages and, even, to the fire.

Pay attention that safety locks have a color code. The table of color codes of safety locks is given below in this paragraph, fuller information on protection of contours and division of safety locks on current, is given in appendices after electric circuits.

Relay

The relay is electrically the operated mechanical switch used usually to the following purposes:

   a) The relay can remotely switch big current.
   b) Unlike mechanically operated switch, the relay can react on more than one operating signal.
   c) The relay can be used to formation of an internal temporary delay. For example, relay of a faltering operating mode of screen wipers or module of the breaker of indexes of turn.

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. The main relays are installed on panels behind the main box of safety locks. For ensuring access to the panel, remove a ware box (see the corresponding paragraphs of the Section Removal and installation to the place of assembly of the forward panel ("Torpedo")). Then give fixing screws and remove from support on a partition a box of safety locks.
2. Additional relays are located in the auxiliary box of safety locks installed in a motive compartment in front of the battery pallet.
3. The relay of system of anti-blocking of brakes (ABS) and the traction control system (TCS) are in the box of safety locks which is specially intended for them installed on a partition of a motive compartment near the tank of brake fluid.
4. In case of malfunction in a contour or the system controlled by this relay or in case of doubts in correctness of operation of the relay include the suspected system. Generally speaking, if the relay is capable, then during its work clicks have to be clearly distinguishable. In case clicks are distinguishable, then it is possible that the cause of defect lies in components of system or in wires. In case clicks of the relay are not heard, then it means that, or the relay is not powered, or on it inclusion tension does not arrive, or the relay is faulty. Check can be carried out by substitution to the place of the suspected relay in advance serviceable, however be careful - though some relays well of an otlichima from each other on appearance, however are available the relay absolutely identical by the form, but the performing various functions - make sure that the substituted relay is the relay of the same type, as suspected.
5. For removal of the relay, at first make sure that the corresponding contour is disconnected. Then the relay can be simply taken from the nest, and at installation is simply thrust on the place. Pay attention that some, most loaded relays can be fixed on the place by the fixing screw.
