16.4. Repair of insignificant damages of a body

Zadelyvaniye of insignificant scratches of elements of a body

In case of very superficial scratches which are not getting to metal of elements of a body, the repair procedure is very simple. Slightly wipe the region of scratch with a reducer of the painted surfaces, such as Turtle Wax Color Back, or very thin abrasive paste, such as Holts Body + Plus Rubbing Compaund. For removal from scratch of the torn-off paint and cleaning of a surrounding surface of an element of a body of wax polish. Wash out area of scratch clear water.

Thin brush cover scratch with automobile paint, continuing to put paint coats until the level of paint is not made even to the top coat layer of this element of a body. Let's fresh paint harden within, at least, two weeks, then achieve imperceptible transition of its color to color of surrounding paint, by rubbing in to the area of a reducer of paint scratched earlier or very thin abrasive paste, such as Holts Body + Plus Rubbing Compaund or Turtle Wax Color Back. In conclusion, apply wax Turtle Wax polish.

Where scratch got into body element metal, having caused its corrosion, use of a bit different equipment is required. Remove with a penknife from a scratch bottom rust flakes, then, in order to avoid formation of a rust in the future, apply such inhibitor of a rust as Turtle Wax Rust Master. The rubber or nylon applicator fill scratch with such spackling paste as Holts Body + Plus Knifing Putty. If necessary, for filling of very narrow (thin) scratches, paste can be diluted by mixing with such thinner as Holts Body + Plus Cellulose Thinners. Before spackling paste in scratch will harden, wind a finger with a piece of soft cotton rags, lower it in a cellulose thinner and quickly carry out across the surface of spackling paste in scratch; at the same time the surface of spackling paste in scratch will be slightly concave in relation to a surrounding surface of an element of a body. Now scratch can be painted over, with use of the technology described above in this section.

Correction of dents in body elements

At education on a surface of a body of the car of deep dents, first of all it is necessary to try to push out the pressed surface outside so that it almost took the original form. At the same time it is necessary to consider that the original form cannot be restored completely in the investigation of the fact that metal in dents, as a result of blow, underwent a pulling. Optimum will be to achieve a flexure of the damaged surface back so that it was about 3 mm lower than the level of the intact surrounding surface of an element of a body. In case the dent so is insignificant, there is no sense to try to curve it back. In case access to the internal surface of the concave area is possible, then the dent can be vystuchat the hammer with a wooden or plastic head from within. At the same time, for restriction of blow of the hammer, in order to avoid protrusion of a bigger surface of an element of a body in the place of damage, at percussion press to the damaged surface from the outer side the wooden block of the suitable size.

In case the dent is on the section of a body having double walls or, for any reason inaccessible from a reverse side, it is necessary to resort to other equipment. Drill in metal, in the damaged area (in particular in its deepest part) several small openings. Then screw in in openings long self-tapping screws on so many that they strongly were fixed in design metal. Now the dent can be extended outside by means of the flat-nose pliers taken for the acting heads of self-tapping screws.

The following stage of the repair procedure is removal of paint from the damaged area, and also around it on width, about, 3 cm. It is simpler to make this procedure by means of a wire or abrasive nozzle to an electric drill though not less effectively operation can be made manually, by means of a piece of an emery paper. The final stage of preparation for a shpaklevaniye is drawing on a naked metal surface, by means of the screw-driver or the end of a file of deep scratches, or is alternative, drilling in the damaged area of small openings. Such processing will provide good coupling of spackling paste with the surface of metal.

Information on completion of a repair procedure is provided in the subsection devoted to a shpaklevaniye and painting of the damaged area by means of a spray.

Zadelyvaniye of the openings which resulted from through corrosion and also holes in body elements

1. Remove from the damaged area, and also from the space surrounding it, all paint about 3 cm wide, having used for this purpose a wire or abrasive nozzle to an electric drill. Alternatively, not less effectively, work can be performed manually, by means of several pieces of an emery paper. After removal of paint, you will be able to determine how serious whether damage is and, therefore, it makes to decide sense to repair the damaged part of a body or it is worth replacing all panel (if it is possible). New panels of a body are far expensive details as most of car owners thinks and, in many cases, much quicker and more effectively it appears to replace all panel, than to make an attempt of restoration of the considerable areas damaged by corrosion.
2. Remove from the damaged area all elements of finishing of a body, except for those which can serve as a reference point for restoration of an original form of the damaged element (such as, for example, internal cases of headlights, etc.). Then, by means of scissors for cutting of a tin or a hacksaw edge, remove all freely dangling pieces of metal, and also all metal injured with impact of corrosion.
3. Slightly begin to knock edges of an opening the hammer inside, for the purpose of creation of easy decrease for spackling paste.
4. A wire brush smooth out the damaged area, having removed a powdery rust from the surface of the remained metal. Cover the damaged area with such inhibitor of a rust as Turtle Wax Rust Master; if access to an internal surface of the damaged area is possible, process as well it.
5. Before starting a shpaklevaniye, the opening has to be blocked by an aluminum or plastic grid or an aluminum tape.
The best material for a zadelyvaniye of big openings is the plastic grid or fiber glass fabric. Prepare a piece of a grid or fabric, in a form and the size corresponding to the opening which is subject to a zashpaklevyvaniye. Then establish it in an opening so that its edges appeared lower than the level of a surrounding surface of an element of a body. Fabric or a grid can be fixed in an opening by several lumps of spackling paste located on the periphery of an opening.
6. The aluminum tape is applied to a zadelyvaniye of insignificant or very narrow holes. Wind off a piece of a tape from the reel, cut off it, approximately, in a form and the size of an opening, then remove a paper substrate (if it is available) from a tape and paste a tape to edges of an opening; in case there is not enough width of one piece of a tape for blocking of all opening, the tape can be imposed in several rows with overlapping.
7. From the inside of the damaged surface smooth down edges of a tape by means of the screw-driver handle, for the purpose of ensuring reliable fastening of a tape to the internal surface of metal.

Shpaklevaniye of the damaged surfaces of elements of a body and their coloring by means of a spray

Before starting implementation of the instructions provided in this subsection all procedures for preparation for a shpaklevaniye of dents, deep scratches and the openings formed as a result of corrosion and holes of the car described above have to be performed.

In shops there is a large number of types of body hard putties, but, generally speaking, it is the is best of all for performance of this kind of works Plus or Holts No Mix which can be put directly from a tube are suitable the patent sets including a can with spackling paste and a tube with a hardener such as Holts Body +. For giving of a surface of hard putty of correctness of a form and smoothness it is necessary to put it with the wide, flexible plastic or nylon applicator.

1. Mix on a pure piece of a cardboard or a board a small amount of hard putty - accurately you make a hardener dosage (following instructions of the manufacturer on packing), otherwise, hard putty can stiffen either too quickly, or too late. The spackling structure of Holts No Mix which does not demand mixing and is squeezed out directly from a tube can be alternatively used, hardening under the influence of daylight.
2. Apply with the applicator spackling paste on previously prepared area; you drive the applicator across the surface of hard putty for giving of the correct form and level to it. At approach of a shpaklyuemy surface to the required level stop putting paste - when putting paste during too long time, it becomes too dense and begins to dry on the surface of the applicator. Continue to apply thin films of spackling paste with intervals 20 minutes until the level of hard putty is not made even (will begin to act a little) with a surrounding surface of a body.
3. After hard putty hardening its surplus can be removed by means of a metal plane or a file.
4. Further, the puttied surface has to be processed by a waterproof emery paper, in the progressing order, beginning from N 40 and, passing to thinner, to N 400. Paper has to be always wrapped up around a flat piece of thick rubber, either a stopper, or wooden whetstone - otherwise it is impossible to achieve absolutely flat surface of hard putty. In processing paper has to be moistened with water periodically. At the same time, the processed surface of hard putty will be very smoothly polished.
5. At the end of this stage of processing "dent" has to be the surrounded with a ring of pure metal which, in turn, has to be surrounded on edge, coming to naught gradually, intact paint. Carefully wash away all dust formed in processing from the repaired area clear water.
6. From a spray cover all processed surface with a thin layer of primer, such as Holts Body + Plus Grey or Red Oxide Primer - at the same time all shortcomings of processing of the puttied surface have to disappear. Cover all dents which are available on the puttied surface fresh spackling paste or bodystopper and again smooth down a surface an emery paper. When using bodystopper it can be mixed with a cellulose thinner, for formation of really thin paste which is ideal for filling of insignificant openings. Continue the procedure of drawing a layer of primer and repeated processing of a surface until the surface does not seem to you processed well.
7. Wash out the processed surface clear water and dry it.
8. Now the processed surface is ready to a final covering paint. Putting paint from a spray has to be made in the warm, dry, windless and not dusty room. In case of impossibility to use the enclosed space, in need of holding a procedure of coloring in the open air, it is necessary to choose day of work very carefully. During the work indoors, for removal from dust air, moisten half of the working platform with water.
9. If coloring of the separate panel of a body of the car is made, cover surrounding panels - it will help to minimize effect of insignificant distinction of tones of paint. Elements of finishing of a body (such as the chromeplated strips, door handles, etc.) also have to be covered. For cover unliable to coloring of elements of a body, use several layers of the newspapers attached to a body by an adhesive tape.
Before starting coloring, carefully stir up a canister with аэрозолью, then spray a trial surface (an old can or a canister) until you develop the satisfactory equipment.
10. Cover the area which is subject to painting with a thick layer of primer; thickness has to be reached by drawing several thin paint coats, but not drawing one thick layer. the 400th number a waterproof emery paper to a zashkurta the surface of primer until it does not become absolutely smooth. During this procedure the processed surface has to be carefully moistened with water, and the emery paper periodically to be dipped in water. Before drawing the subsequent paint coats, let's a surface dry.
11. By means of an autospray like Holts Duply-Color Autospray put a paint blanket, again reaching layer thickness by drawing several thin layers. Begin putting paint from the center of the surface which is subject to coloring and, then, roundabouts move outside until there is a painted-over all processed surface of +5 cm of not touched original paint. 10-15 minutes later after drawing the last paint coat remove all covering materials (newspapers and an adhesive tape).
12. Let's new paint harden during time, at least two weeks, then for imperceptible joining of fresh paint with old, process a svezheokrashenny surface a reducer of the painted surfaces or very thin abrasive paste, such as Turtle Wax Color Back or Holts Body + Plus Rubbing Compaund. In conclusion, apply wax polish.

Plastic components

In process of use of cars of the increasing and bigger quantity by manufacturers plastic a body component (such as bumpers, spoilers and, in certain cases, the main panels of a body) there was a need of correction of serious damages of such elements, a reassignment of this work to experts or replacements of components by new. Correction of such damages by owners is really impossible in a type of high cost of the equipment and the materials necessary for effective holding repair procedures.

Making of flutes along the line of a crack in plasticity by means of the rotating drill got on an electric drill is the cornerstone of technology of carrying out repair. Then parts of the damaged detail cook together, by filling of flutes with material of the plastic core melted by means of the gun of hot air. Excess of plastic then is removed before formation of a smooth surface. An important condition is application of a filling plastic core from correctly chosen material since there is a set of various materials of which body components can be made (such as polycarbonate, polypropylene and ABS plastic).

Less serious damages (such as deleting of a surface, small cracks, etc.) can be corrected by owners by means of two-component tapering repair material, such as Holts Body + Plus or Holt No Mix which can directly be squeezed out from a tube, hardening under the influence of daylight. After mixing in equal proportions (or direct expression from a tube in case of application of Holts No Mix) tapering material is used, then, similar to hard putty for repair of metal panels of a body. Usually in 20 - 30 minutes tapering material is ready to an obrabatyvaniye and a covering paint.

In case of independent replacement of a detail or repair of an old detail by means of epoxy tapering material, the owner of the car will face a problem of selection of the suitable painting material for a covering of a component which has to correspond to type of the used plastic. At one time use of universal paint was impossible owing to a large amount of the plastics which are found in various components of a body of the car, but on sale there were Holts Professional Spraymatch paints which choice allowed to cover components from various plastics and rubbers. However, now there was an opportunity to acquire set for a covering of plastic parts of a body of the car which part prepriming processing, primer and an external covering is. The full instruction for its application is attached to a set, however, the essence of a method is that at the beginning preliminary primer is applied, and then, after its drying within 30 minutes, primer which has to stiffen within an hour then the superficial covering can be put is applied. As a result the plastic component appears the covered structure of the necessary color which is rather flexible not to crack in the course of natural deformations of a component at operation of the car.
