14.3. Replacement of front brake shoes

Brake shoes have to be replaced in a set, that is, both sets of brake shoes - left and right have to be replaced at the same time. Never replace blocks only on one wheel as it can result in unevenness of braking and instability in driving when braking. In spite of the fact that standard brake shoes of SAAB do not contain asbestos, at a clearing of components of a brake it is better to observe the precautionary measures provided during the work with asbestos elements.

Do not apply compressed air to blowing of brake dust - use a brush. Avoid dust inhalation; use a respirator. For cleaning of components of the brake system use only patent cleaners for brake systems or methyl alcohol. Do not apply gasoline or other benzinsoderzhashchy products at all.

Removal of brake shoes - ATE support

1. Remove boots from the first support.
2. Then by means of a 7-mm six-sided core weaken and remove the directing fingers.
3. Carefully by means of the screw-driver take a spring clip; at the same time support the hydraulic case of a support.
4. Accept the weight of the hydraulic case and remove it from an arm. If brake shoes are pressed to a disk, having grasped with couple of clips an internal block, press the piston back into a support.
5. Take out an internal block from the hydraulic case, выковырнув the antivizgovy spring attached to its back wall. Remove an external brake shoe.
6. Fix for a ledge on the hydraulic case a piece of a rope or a welding electrode and suspend the case in a convenient point on a stretcher.
7. Similarly remove brake shoes from the second support.
8. Clean off brake dust from a support surface, having used a brush and special liquid for cleaning of components of the brake system. Avoid inhalation of the dust which is contained in air.
9. Examine piston cuffs regarding detection of signs of leaks or damages, also examine the piston regarding detection of signs of wear or damages. After removal of the hydraulic case make sure that the directing fingers freely slide in the nests, but without excessive side play.

Do not suspend the hydraulic case on brake hoses.

Survey of brake shoes - all supports

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Measure thickness of the frictional slips which remained on each block. If any of blocks it is worn-out below an admissible limit (watch Specifications), the set of all four blocks (both driving wheels) has to be replaced. Similarly, at detection on any of blocks of traces of pollution all set has to be replaced with lubricant or oil which are not subject to removal. In case of pollution of brake shoes define and remove the cause of their pollution before establishing new blocks. If all blocks are in working order, carefully clear them, having used a brush (ideally a thin wire brush) and the special cleaning liquid for components of the brake system. Pay special attention to a metal substrate of blocks in the place where the block contacts to a support. Examine surfaces of frictional slips; carefully remove the foreign particles which ate in them.
2. Apply a small amount of the brake lubricant containing copper on back walls of metal substrates; do not allow hit of lubricant on frictional slips.
3. Not bad at survey and replacement of brake shoes at the same time to examine a condition of brake disks (address the Section Survey, removal and installation to the place of a forward brake disk).

Installation of brake shoes - Girling support

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. On the first support insert brake shoes on the places frictional slips to a disk.
2. Turn the hydraulic case of a support down on the place. If slips rest against a disk, in couple of clips press on an internal block for the purpose of a piston zadviganiye back in a support.
3. Establish into place and tighten a fixing bolt of the directing finger.
4. Similarly establish into place brake shoes of the second support.
5. Several times press a brake pedal; thereby you lift pressure in system and you will bring blocks into contact with disks. If in a pedal there was a feeling of softness, then it means that at removal of brake shoes air could get to system - watch the procedure of pumping of brakes in the Section Pumping of the Brake System.
6. Establish to the place of a wheel, lower the car on the earth and tighten bolts of fastening of wheels with the required effort.
7. Add brake fluid in the tank so that its level rose to the mark MAX, establish into place a cover.

Installation of brake shoes - ATE support

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Establish an external brake shoe in the first support, having entered blocking ears of a metal substrate of a block into the corresponding flutes of an arm. Make sure that the surface of a frictional slip is located parallel to a disk surface.
2. Install an internal brake shoe in the hydraulic case, having pressed ledges of an antivizgovy spring into the hollow piston.
3. By means of a clamp or a vice press the piston and an internal block back into the hydraulic case. After installation of a block the hydraulic case can be installed on an arm.
4. Weaken and remove clamps/vice, having allowed the piston and blocks to take seat on the places. Slightly grease the directing fingers with the anti-taking lubricant and establish them into place, tighten fingers with the required effort (address Specifications). Establish into place boots.
5. Establish into place a spring clip, having inserted its ends into the openings made in the hydraulic case.
6. Similarly insert blocks into the second support.
7. Several times press a brake pedal, it will lift pressure in the brake system and will bring blocks into contact with disks. If in feeling of a pedal there was a softness, then it means that in the course of removal of brake shoes air got to system - pump over system (Section Pumping of the Brake System).
8. Establish to the place of a wheel, lower the car on the earth and tighten bolts of fastening of wheels with the required effort.
9. Add in the tank of brake fluid new liquid to a mark a maximum, establish into place a cover.

You watch that at installation of blocks there was no transfusion of brake fluid from the tank.
